Conditions that affect the anatomy or proper function of a woman's fallopian tubes can also contribute to her infertility. Tubal factors are the main cause of infertility for 11-30% of infertile couples.
Various abnormalities to the fallopian tubes can occur due to inflammations.
These anatomical lesions can have a direct effect by disabling the entrance of the egg from the ovary to the tubes, or by affecting the tube's ability to transport the egg and sperm. Endometriosis can also play an important role as it can damage the fallopian tubes.
Finally, all of the above can lead to blocked fallopian tubes, which is a common form of infertility as the eggs and sperm cannot meet in the tubes, which is the normal site of fertilisation.
