Our treatment for severe OΗSS is established as a tertiary prevention internationally.
Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is the most serious complication in IVF programs and until recently there was no treatment for the severe stage of this syndrome that frequently requires hospitalization.
In case of OHSS, despite the cautionary measures taken, a new revolutionary therapeutic approach is applied by administering antagonist injections after the oocyte retrieval, in the luteal phase, in order to avoid hospitalization.
This pioneer approach, which was introduced by the Eugonia team in collaboration with the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki has replaced:
a) the absence of treatment and
b) the symptomatic treatment in hospital, with simple monitoring.
This treatment is usually accompanied by cancellation of embryo transfer and cryopreserving (freezing) of all embryos, although under certain circumstances it can be combined with fresh embryo transfer in the current cycle.
In all women who underwent this treatment in our Unit, rapid regression of the syndrome at the outpatient level was observed and no woman was hospitalized, as was usually required in the past.
This treatment is internationally approved as a tertiary prevention of OHSS and it’s the only therapeutic treatment for an established severe OHSS so far. The outcome for the patient herself is less physical burden and reduced psychological stress, financial cost of hospital expenses and loss of working hours.
